Alcoholics Synonymous #2: The Thin Man

Raise your glasses to the 2nd installment of Alcoholics Synonymous! Books and booze to help us get through the winter! Join us for an evening of literary discussion at various bars throughout the neighborhood. What better way to spend the cold, dark days of winter than cozying up to a local bar for drinks and discussion?

Originally appearing in the December 1933 issue of Redbook magazine, Dashiell Hammett's The Thin Man was published as a book the following month. To celebrate the 85th anniversary this December, B'el Bar + Kitchen will be transforming into a speakeasy for one night only and serving up the finest in Prohibition era cocktails to wet our whistles and get discourse flowing.

In Hammett’s famous crime novel, we meet one of the detective-story master’s most enchanting creations, Nick and Nora Charles, a rich, glamorous couple who solve homicides in between wisecracks and martinis. At once knowing and unabashedly romantic, The Thin Man is a classic murder mystery that doubles as a sophisticated comedy of manners.

The story is set in New York City in December 1932, in the last days of Prohibition. The narrative opens at Christmas time. Nick and Nora are toasting the holiday season when a woman turns up dead. Nick just happens to be acquainted with her employer and away we go!

Books are available to purchase at Bucket O' Blood Books and Records. The meetup is at B'el, right next door. Attendees will be expected to have read the book and be ready to have a lively discussion while being considerate of all guests present. Please get in touch if you have any questions!
